Increase Cash Flow – Benefit from Available Credits & Incentives for Exempt Organizations

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 offers new incentives related to energy efficient construction projects and other energy incentives. For the first time, tax-exempt entities can benefit from these new incentives. During this webinar, we will review available tax incentives and how they may benefit tax-exempt entities.

Learning Objectives:

Explore the Employee Retention Credit opportunities for tax-exempt organizations as it relates to IRA Incentives.
Examine IRA energy efficiency opportunities for exempt organizations that are building and/or updating their properties.
Demonstrate how new legislation can facilitate the drive for sustainability and reduce the costs of construction.
Identify the factors that must be in place to facilitate a transfer of the 179D benefit to a designer.
Define opportunities for direct payment of energy credits.

Joe O’Neil, CPA, Partner | Eide Bailly
Joe is a consultant with over 18 years of experience focused on understanding your core business needs and works to deliver value through quality, timely projects. He has a history of providing top-notch services across multiple areas of federal taxation. Specific areas of expertise include tax methods and periods related to fixed assets and inventory. Additionally, Joe has a passion for business credits and incentives, specifically green energy credits and research and development tax credits. He has a deep working knowledge in the manufacturing, real estate, healthcare, transportation and technology industries. Joe is a member of Eide Bailly’s National Tax Office (NTO), and acts as a resource for clients to become tax efficient and help analyze complex tax issues related to business decisions.

Joe Sawatske, HERS Rater, Principal/Energy Incentives | Eide Bailly
Joe has over 15 years of experience in helping taxpayers realize tax incentives through the construction, renovation and design of energy efficient real estate. As the head of Eide Bailly’s Energy Efficiency Incentives (EEI) group, Joe oversees a national team of Professional Engineers, energy modelers and HERS raters. The growing EEI group has extensive experience in performing 179D deduction, 45L credit and ENERGY STAR studies.

Kim Hunwardsen, CPA, Partner/Tax-Exempt Organizations Practice Leader | Eide Bailly
Kim leads our exempt organization tax practice and is a member of Eide Bailly’s National Tax office. Her 29 years of public accounting experience has been devoted entirely to working with various types of tax-exempt organizations including private foundations, hospitals, higher education institutions and other public charities. During this time, she has worked closely with many nonprofits to address challenging tax issues so that they are resolved in the manner most beneficial to the organization. Kim consults on issues such as mergers and acquisitions, formation of tax-exempt entities, unrelated business income issues, compensation and benefit issues, restructuring of healthcare systems, IRS exams and community health needs assessments among many other unique requirements of exempt organizations. Kim is a frequent speaker regarding tax issues that impact nonprofit organizations.

Tonya Rule, CPA, Partner/Affordable Care Act Practice Leader and Employee Retention Credit Co-Practice Leader | Eide Bailly
Tonya has 20+ years public accounting experience providing tax and consulting services to individuals and businesses. She currently leads the Firm’s Affordable Care Act (ACA) services and co-leads the Firm’s Employee Retention Credit (ERC) services. For the ACA, she assists large employers with the compliance requirements, Forms 1094-C and 1095-C, and she also advises them on very technical rules that many employers and advisors aren’t aware of. In addition, she works with small businesses who are planning on expanding their current operations to make sure they are doing everything from measuring their employees correctly to deciding on the best insurance plan for their business. Tonya regularly works with clients on various ACA IRS notices and has been very successful in getting most of these penalties abated. For the ERC, she works with internal and external clients on the technical rules surrounding the ERC and helps businesses correctly determine if they qualify. She also provides assistance with the IRS to support ERC claims.
